Steam Power

In 2009 the museum’s shop crew completed the ground-up construction of a fully operational steam locomotive that is reminiscent of an 1880’s industrial engine.

Instead of a pressured boiler, steam is produced by a steam generator.  Essentially a water-tube boiler, the power plant generates sufficient steam without need of a pressurized vessel.  It requires about 20 minutes to fire up and the same amount of time to shut down.  The oil-fired generator is clean burning, economical, and doesn’t present a fire hazard.

The 15 foot-long locomotive took three years, 10,000 volunteer hours, and $34,000 in material to complete. The entire project was funded through private donations
